I’m Spencer, and this is my attempt, as someone once told me, to write what I know and what I want to learn more about. Learn to Surf is my homage and my hope to aid all those who are interested in learning how to surf. It’s an on-again, off-again hobby that’s been something of a touchstone for my life throughout the years. In other words, I love to surf, but I don’t get to do it as much as I’d like. Also, I know people who are a lot bigger fans than even me.
I’m originally from California. I never knew him personally, but I hung out with a group of friends connected to Richard Schmidt, locally famous in Santa Cruz and in many surfing circles. I’ve since moved to Florida. I was never really that skilled a surfer even back in the day. Nowadays, a lot of it is physical limitations. I still do a fair amount of paddle surfing when I get the chance and am feeling up to it.
This website is also an attempt to remember but also to replenish my knowledge, if not my practice, of the art that is riding a wave. Plus, I’m a firm believer in that, no matter how long you’ve been doing it and even at my age, we all Learn to Surf every time we go out.
